Extension to WCS allows control of interpolation during processing of Coverages.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is requesting public comment on the candidate OGC Web Coverage Service (WCS) – Interpolation Extension, before moving to vote on its adoption. Comments are due by April 21, 2025.

The WCS Interpolation Extension defines an extension to the WCS 2.1 Interface Standard – Core (OGC 17-089r1) to control interpolation during processing of a GetCoverage request. This affects all operations that require interpolation, such as subsetting, scaling, and Coordinate Reference System (CRS) transformation.

In this revision, interpolation scope is extended to allow slicing not only at, but additionally between, direct positions in the coverage if the coverage allows interpolation at all.

This revision addresses the problem where a slice position (such as a timeslice coordinate) deviates slightly through accuracy or rounding challenges and the request returns an error. Interpolation, such as between timeslices, is now allowed. Experience with large timeseries datacubes has shown that a graceful handling of slicing between direct positions is highly desirable.

Existing functionality is unchanged.
