The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is seeking public comment on the proposed OGC SensorThings API Version 2.0 Standard.
OGC SensorThings API is an OGC Standard that defines an open and unified framework for interconnecting Internet of Things (IoT) sensing devices, data, and applications over the Web. The Standard is based on the OGC Observations, Measurements and Samples (OMS) Standard, also formalized as ISO 19156:2023, that provides a conceptual model for capturing all relevant information pertaining to observed or measured data.
The OGC SensorThings API addresses both the syntactic and semantic interoperability of the IoT and complements existing IoT networking protocols. The OGC SensorThings API enables different IoT systems to use and understand the exchanged information through its integration of OMS concepts. As an OGC Standard, the SensorThings API also allows easy integration into existing Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
While originally conceived within the IoT domain, the OGC SensorThings API has proven applicable across a wide range of use cases beyond IoT. Although the term ‘Sensors’ appears in the name, its applicability extends beyond traditional sensor environments. It has been successfully utilized for ex situ measurements performed in laboratory settings as well as field surveys, where humans take on the role of the Sensor. Generally utilized for providing real-time data directly from sensors, the API has also been successfully deployed on legacy data. As a result, the OGC SensorThings API has evolved from its IoT roots to become a full-fledged standard for the provision of observational data, taking into account all relevant measurement metadata as foreseen under the OGC OMS Standard.
Version 2.0 of OGC SensorThings API updates the API definition to align with OData Version 4.01. The data model has also been updated, to address additional use cases and integrate concepts from the update of the dependent OGC OMS Standard.
To Comment
The proposed OGC SensorThings API Version 2.0 Standard is available for review and comment for a period of 30 days. Comments are due by 18 January, 2026.
Comments can be submitted as Issues in the OGC SensorThings API GitHub repository for a period ending on the close request date listed above. Comments received will be consolidated and reviewed by OGC members for potential incorporation into the document.
