The SymCore is a conceptual, modular, neutral model for the portrayal of geographical data. The model contains a minimal set of abstract classes representing explicit extension points of the model. It forms the conceptual basis to define symbology rules for the portrayal of geographical data. It is modular and extensible (one core model, many extensions), also encoding agnostic (one symbology model, many encodings). It contains a minimal set of abstract classes representing explicit extension points of the model.
SymCore provide the flexibility required to achieve adequate symbology rules for a variety of information communities; e.g., aviation symbols, weather symbols, thematic maps, etc,; and achieve high-level styling interoperability without encoding dependencies. Implementations of SymCore are expected to enhance OGC standards such as the Web Map Service, Web Feature Service, GeoPackage, and others.
