The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) seeks public comment on the proposed OGC API – Processes Standard Version 2, comprising Part 1: Core and Part 2: Deploy, Replace, Undeploy.

The OGC API – Processes Standard is a resource-oriented API that allows for the execution of computing processes and the retrieval of metadata describing those processes. It is the modern, RESTful successor to the OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) 2.0 Interface Standard. The Standard uses OpenAPI, JSON, and modern web architectural patterns to make geospatial processing more accessible to web developers.

Key benefits of the Standard include:

  • Developer friendly: Uses JSON by default and integrates easily with modern web frameworks and tools such as Swagger and ReDoc.
  • Scalable: Designed to work well with cloud-native architectures, microservices, and containerized environments.
  • Modular: Uses a building-block approach, allowing servers to implement only the capabilities they require. For example, a server may support process execution without supporting dynamic process deployment.
  • Interoperable: Standardizes how parameters are passed to algorithms, enabling process execution on any compliant server regardless of the underlying programming language (such as C, Python, or Java).

Like other OGC APIs, including OGC API – Features and OGC API – Records, OGC API – Processes uses a common core for landing pages, conformance declarations, and API definitions. This consistency allows developers to use similar patterns across different types of geospatial web services.

Part 1: Core specifies the requirements that any implementation of the OGC API – Processes in a Web API deployment must support.

Part 2: Deploy, Replace, Undeploy extends the core capabilities defined in Part 1 with the ability to dynamically add, modify and/or delete individual processes using an implementation (endpoint) of the OGC API – Processes Standard.

The proposed OGC API – Processes Standard Version 2, Parts 1 and 2 is available for review and comment for a period of 30 days.

Comments can be submitted in the OGC GitHub repository for a period ending on the “Close request date” listed above. Comments received will be consolidated and reviewed by OGC members for potential incorporation into the document.
