OGC's Innovation Program in 2017

In 2017, OGC's Innovation Program officially changed its name from the Interoperability Program and crossed the '100th initiative' milestone. In this time, I also came on as its new Executive Director.

The program started/continued 13 initiatives, including Interoperability Experiments (IE), Plugfests, Pilots, Concept Development Studies, Expert Services, and a Testbed. Each of these initiatives helped OGC, its members, and the global community move closer to achieving OGC's vision of "a world in which everyone benefits from the use of geospatial information and supporting technologies."

Throughout 2017, Innovation Program Initiative sponsors from around the globe provided 3.4M US dollars in funding, and in-kind contributions provided the equivalent of between 2-4 times this funding, further boosting the capabilities of these initiatives.

The initiatives covered many different 'domains' (see below), including Smart cities, Cloud, Defense & Intelligence, and GeoScience & the Environment, among others. OGC was also involved in various H2020 projects including DataBio, ESPRESSO and NextGEOSS.

2017 OGC IP Initiatives by domain

The IP Program is currently looking for participation in several initiatives, including:

All in all, 2017 was a successful year for OGC's IP Project, and I'm looking forward to building upon that success for 2018. To all the Initiative Sponsors, OGC Members, and various members of the global geospatial community that helped make 2017 so succesful: thank you, and I wish you all the best for 2018.
