OGC Seeks Quotations/Participation in Critical Infrastructure Protection Initiative

tidol [at] opengeospatial.orgjharrison [at] opengeospatial.orgWayland, MA, USA, August 19, 2002 – The Open GIS Consortium, Inc. (OGC) invites responses to a Call for Participation/Request for Quotation (RFP/RFQ) for OGC Critical Infrastructure Protection Initiative Phase 1 (CIPI-1).CIPI takes a new approach to help organizations publish, discover, access, exchange, and maintain vital geo-spatial information and online geoprocessing services required to support critical infrastructure protection. As critical infrastructure protection becomes further integrated into government functions, decision makers need the management edge that interoperable geoprocessing provides.CIPI-1 is the first of several pilot programs addressing the challenge of critical infrastructure protection.CIPI-1 has several objectives including the creation of a Critical Infrastructure Collaborative Environment (CICE).

Twenty-one Participants Join Sponsors to Kick off OGC Web Services 1.2 Initiative

Wayland, MA, USA, August 9, 2002 – The Open GIS Consortium, Inc. (OGC) kicked off the second threadset of its Web Services Initiative Phase 1 (OWS-1.2) recently with a four day meeting in Herndon, Virginia.OWS is long-term project that aims to advance interoperable geospatial and imagery web services technology, support development of a multi-vendor portable demonstration, and feed requirements and recommendations into OGCs OpenGIS Specification process.OWS 1.2 will focus on developing new OGC interface specifications in the areas of image handling, sensor web enablement, service chaining, and feature handling, as well as, extending existing OGC interface specifications, and draft engineering specifications developed in OWS1.1 and other OGC Interoperability Initiatives.OGC is an international industry consortium of more than 230 companies, government agencies and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available interface specifications. The specifications empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful with all kinds of applications.

OGC Seeks Interested Parties for Geospatial One-Stop Transportation Pilot Activity

This task is part of a larger effort to develop data content standards and other capabilities for the Geospatial One-Stop project currently underway by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC).Through a Geospatial One-Stop Transportation Pilot Initiative, OGC is partnering with the FGDC and other organizations to create a tool and associated processes to deploy these models for practical application by cooperating communities.Content standards and models resulting from the MAT process will be submitted to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for adoption. In July OGC will issue a Geospatial One-Stop Transportation Pilot RFQ to seek solutions for the implementation of a UML to GML tool that will be available for later use in future Geospatial One-Stop framework standards efforts. The Geospatial One-Stop Transportation Pilot is part of OGCs Interoperability Program, a global, collaborative, hands-on engineering and testing program that rapidly delivers proven candidate specifications into OGCs Specification Program, where they are formalized for public release.

OGC and Columbia Earth Institute Partner to Explore Interoperability

OGC and the Earth Institute will work together to develop a Columbia-OGC Interoperability Laboratory, which will become a node on the OGC Network and provide a neutral, controlled framework for collaborative interoperability testing, training, demonstrations and development for the benefit of scientists and OGC members. To kick off the new relationship the Earth Institute hosted OGCs Technical and Planning Committee Meetings earlier this year at Columbia.David Schell, OGC President believes that Columbia Universitys work complements that of OGC.The Earth Institute is a major center for linking new understandings of Earth, derived from the physical sciences, to research on natural ecological and human systems and the policy process.Since its inception in 1996, the Earth Institute at Columbia University has been a leader in understanding Earth processes to enhance sustainability through the teaching, research and application of Earth systems science to benefit society.

Successful OGC Demonstration Launches FEMA Hazard Mapping Framework

OGCs FEMA-sponsored Multi-Hazard Mapping Initiative Phase 1 (MMI-1) concluded with a successful demonstration on May 9, 2002 of a standards-based framework for discovery, access, and distribution of multi-hazard map data.Federal, state and local agencies are now invited to participate in further development and growth of this information-sharing framework.Geospatial technology providers CubeWerx, Compusult, ESRI, Harvard Design and Mapping (HDM), IONIC, MapInfo and SAIC engaged in the consensus-based development and testing of this legacy-compatible interoperability framework. It can be viewed at http://www.hazardmaps.gov FEMA invites state, local, and federal agencies to partner in improving and expanding this framework. If you are interested in becoming involved in OGC programs, contact Jeff Harrison at, 703-491-9543; or Mark Reichardt at, 301-840-1361.

At the June meeting of the Open GIS Consortium, Inc. (OGC) in London, Ron Lake received OGCs fourth annual Kenneth G. Gardels Award. The Gardels Award, a gold medallion, is awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to advance OGCs vision of geographic information fully integrated into the worlds information systems.Ron Lake is president and CEO of Galdos Systems, Inc. (Vancouver, Canada). The award is given annually in memory of Kenneth Gardels, one of the founding directors of OGC and OGCs former director of academic programs.Mr. Gardels coined the term Open GIS, and devoted his life to the humane and democratic uses of geographic information systems.

NASA Now a Strategic Member of OGC

Wayland, MA, June 4, 2002 – The Open GIS Consortium, Inc.
