The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is offering sponsorship opportunities to support the OGC Climate & Disaster Resilience Pilot 2024 (CDRP24). The Pilot follows on from the successful OGC Climate Resilience Pilot and series of OGC Disaster Pilots and forms the next phase of the ongoing OGC disaster and climate initiative that has been running for more than five years across multiple focus areas and cycles. Applications for Sponsorship close September 22, 2024.

The objective of the Climate and Disaster Resilience Pilot 2024 is to accelerate our collective readiness for climate change and their related disasters by enhancing the value chain that transforms raw data to climate and disaster information, for the benefit of decision makers.

Sponsoring the CDRP24 will directly improve Climate Resilience Information Systems and Emergency Management Systems. Sponsors will benefit from having their specific requirements addressed by teams of experts in integration and interoperability. Sponsors enable organizations to collaboratively improve and enhance the sponsors’ systems, progress technical capabilities, and advance scientific reliability of Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and Decision Ready Indicators (DRI). Sponsors will also be given the unique opportunity to share the newly developed interactive systems solutions to the international community working within and across the climate and disaster domains.

CDRP24 will consist of individual threads that each work towards specific end-user, stakeholder, and technical goals that advance our climate and/or disaster understanding and readiness while also seeding collaboration between these two related domains.

With the goal to develop a reliable foundation upon which interoperable science services for climate change actions can be built, the CDRP24 will develop and document interoperable methods for accessing, fusing, and analyzing data from the climate change modeling community with Earth observation and social science data.

For this purpose, OGC members engaged in this pilot will continue to develop a series of demonstrators to illustrate possible workflows, community collaborations, technical advances in APIs, etc. The demonstrators will show the integration and combined exploitation of data such as numerical model data, EO data, social science data, and beyond. Once developed they can be integrated into the OGC Open Science Persistent Demonstrator, which aims to demonstrate interoperability between emerging Earth observation and science technologies and infrastructures, and is accompanied by capacity building, provenance, and learning material.

The latest Climate Resilience and Disaster Pilots each investigated interoperable techniques for creating visualization and communication tools along with advancing Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and Decision Ready Indicators (DRI) to improve access and resilience. However, the separate climate and disaster information flows for emergency decision-making do not yet integrate well. Improvements to their integration would benefit both communities and wider society alike. As such, CDRP24 will take a stakeholder-centric approach that addresses these aspects using scenarios of wildland fire, drought, heat, land degradation, floods, and landslides & debris flows.

While building upon the knowledge gained from past pilots, the intent of the Pilot is to:

  • Enhance climate and disaster services by moving the underpinning technical systems towards FAIR Climate & Disaster Services: collaborative and equitable Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable systems that provide information-on-demand to understand, trace, mitigate, adapt, and respond.
  • Build sustainable relationships between science domains, researchers, decision makers, and data & systems providers.
  • Identify the stakeholder’s information and knowledge needs and tailor innovative solutions that promote community and environmental resilience across disparate science and social domains accordingly.
  • Improve visualization, use-case driven simulations, and communication approaches.
  • Improve interactivity and interchanges with OGC’s sponsors, members, and participants to ensure the greatest applicability and a broader scope and impact.

The OGC Climate & Disaster Resilience Pilot 2024 will be conducted under OGC’s Collaborative Solutions and Innovation (COSI) Program (formerly the Innovation Program), a collaborative, agile, and hands-on prototyping and engineering environment where sponsors and OGC members come together to address location interoperability challenges while validating international open standards. To learn about the benefits of sponsoring an OGC COSI Program Initiative such as this, visit the OGC COSI Program webpage.

More information about CDRP24, including the Call For Sponsors document, is available on the OGC Climate and Disaster Resilience Pilot 2024 webpage. Sponsorship applications close September 22, 2024.
