The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) membership seeks to form a new Transportation and Mobility Domain Working Group. Public comment is sought on its draft Charter. Comments are due by May 7, 2024.

The Transportation and Mobility DWG will concern itself with technology and technology policy issues, focusing on geodata information and technology interests as related to the transport and mobility domain, and the means by which those issues are appropriately factored into the OGC Standards development process.

A number of OGC Standards Working Groups (SWG) or Domain Working Groups (DWG) include transportation topics in their discussions and use-cases – such as road networks in the Land And Infrastructure SWG, maritime charts in the Marine DWG, or moving objects in the Moving Features SWG. However, these topics are typically focused and of limited scope relevant only to that Working Group. More general consideration of mobility topics in the transportation domain and practice area have not had a dedicated forum in OGC.

As such, the OGC Membership has moved to create a dedicated Transportation and Mobility DWG that will undertake the following key activities:

  • Identify OGC and related Standards for use in the transportation and mobility domains, including guidance on the best use of those Standards.
  • Assess transportation and mobility use-cases that might be addressed by geospatial Standards and practices.
  • Link existing OGC Working Groups that address transportation and mobility topics, directly or indirectly.
  • Liaise with external organizations in the domain, such as ISO/TC 204 Intelligent Transport Systems.
  • Assist with the development and validation of use-cases for modernization of the Geographic Data Files (ISO 20524-1, -2) Standard.
  • Identify commonalities between existing and forecast transportation-related Standards, including proposed work on High Definition Maps.

Specifically, the Transport and Mobility DWG will operate within the scope of the following topics:

  • Geographic representation of transportation networks and environments.
  • Location referencing and positioning for transportation and mobility.
  • Use of spatial and geographic information in the delivery of Intelligent Transport Systems.
  • Use of electronic transportation databases for navigation, routing, and commerce.
  • Multimodal transportation interface descriptions.
  • Logistics optimization and goods mobility.
  • Automation in transportation and mobility systems.

The draft charter for the OGC Transport and Mobility Domain Working Group (OGC 24-012) (.HTML) is available for review and comment on the OGC Portal. Comments are due by May 7, 2024, and should be submitted via the method below.
