The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) seeks public comment on the candidate OGC API – Common – Part 2: Geospatial Data Standard. The standard provides a consistent means of organizing geospatial data in collections and defines how to list and retrieve descriptions of those collections over the Web.
The OGC Standards Baseline has been extended to include Resource Oriented Architectures and Web APIs. During the development of OGC Web API standards, several practices were identified as being common across multiple APIs. These common practices are documented in the OGC API — Common Multi-Part Standard which establishes the foundation of how most of the OGC Web APIs work and provides a set of reusable building blocks. Standards developers can use these components to construct OGC Web API Standards, resulting in a modular suite of coherent API standards adaptable to the specific requirements of different systems.
This Standard specifically defines the HTTP GET operations and responses for the /collections and /collections/{collectionId} resources. The description of the collections includes properties such as the spatiotemporal and multidimensional extents, resolution, coordinate reference systems, provenance, attribution, usage rights, creation/update timestamps, links to data access mechanisms, optional links to logical schemas with semantic definition of fields/properties, and optional links to more detailed metadata such as ISO 19115. The OGC API Common – Part 2: Geospatial Data Standard is agnostic of the nature of the geospatial data within a collection, being applicable to any kind of geospatial data and data access mechanisms. These data access mechanisms are defined by other OGC API Standards such as: OGC API – Maps, OGC API – Features, OGC API – Coverages, OGC API – EDR, etc.
To Comment
The candidate OGC API – Common – Part 2: Geospatial Data Standard is available for review and comment for a period of 45 days. Comments are due by January 23, 2026.
Comments can be submitted as Issues in the OGC API – Common GitHub repository for a period ending on the “Close request date” listed above. Comments received will be consolidated and reviewed by OGC members for potential incorporation into the document.
