Event Description:

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) invites developers to its next virtual Code Sprint, which will focus on refining the OGC API - Environmental Data Retrieval candidate standard. The OGC API - EDR Sprint #2 virtual event will be held on November 9-10, 2020, from 9:00am 5:30pm US Eastern.

An OGC Sprint is a collaborative and inclusive event driven by innovative and rapid programming with minimal process and organization constraints to support the development of new applications and candidate standards.

A pre-event webinar will take place on November 4, 2020 at 9:00am US Eastern. The webinar will set out the scope of the code sprint and provide an overview of the candidate standard.

OGC has been developing a new generation of standards for building web APIs that make location-referenced information more Findable, Accessible, Interoperabile, and Reusable (FAIR). These draft specifications come from OGC’s effort to create modular, resource-oriented API standards that use OpenAPI for describing interfaces that offer location-referenced information over the web.

To ensure that all of the new OGC API standards are as developer-friendly, usable, and mature as possible before release, each draft specification is being put through one or more Code Sprints to test and improve their ‘readiness’ before starting the OGC standards approval process.

The OGC API - Environmental Data Retrieval (EDR) candidate standard uses current web technologies and best practices to enable end-users - or anyone with web development experience - to easily identify and retrieve a subset of data from ‘big data’ stores. The idea is to save those users interested in environmental (or other) data from having to transfer and deal with datasets that inevitably contain data concerning areas or time periods that are irrelevant to their interests.

A major objective of this second OGC API - EDR Sprint is to enable full interoperability of all existing, and new, client and server implementations that support the OGC API – EDR candidate standard. All participation will be remote, through web-conferencing services provided by OGC.

There will be an opportunity for joint discussion with all participants on the goals and objectives of the event, as well as the final briefing of findings and opinions of the participants. However, the majority of the time will be spent in collaboration between participants in active coding.

To learn more about the previous OGC API - EDR Code Sprint, as well as a refresher on the draft standard itself, read the post entitled The OGC Environmental Data Retrieval API: simple access to big data on the OGC blog.

Registration for the OGC API - EDR Sprint and its associated Pre-event Webinar is here. Registration closes at 9:00am US Eastern on November 8, 2020.
