AR Summit Goals

The November 2019 AR Summit will provide those with shared interest in AR visualization to discuss requirements and to inform and advance OGC standards that reduce barriers to data and service interoperability for widespread use of AR. 

The AR Summit brings together leading experts to share world-class research and to demonstrate the benefits of interoperable geospatial standards when visualizing data in context with the real world. Participants will identify pain-points and where and how standard encodings can be advanced or implemented to better deliver digital information to people as they live, learn, play and work in the real world. The outcomes of this Summit will form part of the basis of a new OGC White Paper on AR.

Among discussion topics: 

  • What new standards work may be needed to meet the requirements of current and future geospatial data owners and users for real time visualization in AR? 
  • What existing standards could be extended to meet the requirements of current and future AR users? 
  • What partnerships or collaborative projects can OGC members establish or expand to inform and advance interoperable AR?
  • Does there need to be a forum designated for members to discuss challenges and advance solutions on which they can collaborate?
  • How will OGC members benefit from their collaborative or parallel activities within OGC and with/in other organizations to reduce barriers to widespread interoperable AR experiences?


This event brings together thought leaders and experts in 3D geospatial data acquisition, storage, management, delivery and presentation from private and public organizations of all sizes, world-class researchers, as well as policy makers, many of whom are OGC members.

SESSION ONE – Setting the Stage

SESSION TWO – AR Users, Data and Devices: Today and Tomorrow

Duration: 1hr 30m (starting at 1:00 PM)

DESCRIPTION: This panel session is focused on the needs of AR users, both today and into the future. With a focus on the priorities of those who own and generate data which can be presented in AR view, panelists will [TBD]. Panelists each have 15 minutes to present, followed by group discussion.

SESSION THREE – Challenges to Integration

Duration: 1hr 20m (starting at 2:45 PM)

DESCRIPTION: This panel session is focused on the integration requirements of AR today and into the future. With a focus on the priorities of large enterprises, government agencies, and their respective stakeholders, panelists will discuss what is needed for AR to seamlessly add visualization to existing enterprise management and IT systems. They will put forward questions or recommendations to the geospatial standards community. Of particular interest are geospatial data needs, exchange best practices, gaps and solutions. Panelists each have 15 minutes to present, followed by group discussion.

SESSION FOUR – Approaches to Data and Service Interoperability

Duration: 1hr20 min

DESCRIPTION: This panel will identify and discuss approaches to creating and integrating 3D spatial data for AR (AR Cloud) services and to consider the needs identified in prior panels. This panel will share examples of work, geospatial data and web service standards/models, identify pathways forward to advance interoperable geospatial (OGC) web encodings standards for interfaces, and aim to set in motion efforts to pilot/document standards which solve market needs. Panelists each have 15 minutes to present, followed by group discussion.

  • Group discussion, Q&A, Recommendations: next steps to advance standards work, recommendations and to put forward to OGC TC on Friday. (20 minutes)



Augmented Reality is the non-immersive visualization of digital information in context with the real world. It will provide new capabilities to workers in many industries with deep roots in the geospatial community (navigation, defense, construction, utilities, meteorology, resource management, industry and civil protection) and use cases (planning/simulation, delivery of in-situ data and instructions, navigation, etc) that are familiar to the OGC. 
AR has been the focus of an OGC Standard Working Group (which developed ARML 2.0), the topic of a past OGC summit (in Nottingham in 2015), a component of the 2018 Testbed 14 and the April 2019 Mixed Reality at the Edge workshop.
There have been and may be ongoing discussions about AR topics in:

  • Energy and Utilities DWG
  • Point Cloud DWG
  • 3DIM DWG
  • Portrayal DWG
  • Meteorology and Oceans DWG
  • Spatial Data on the Web WG
  • 3D Portrayal SWG
  • CityGML SWG
  • IndoorGML SWG

In September 2019, members will be asked to approve the creation of a new SWG focusing on GeoPose. One of the requirements driving the initiation of work on GeoPose is the lack of a standard for AR user localization.

The OGC does not have a forum or focal point where/when members with shared interests and needs for AR visualization based on interoperable data and systems periodically or regularly gather.

Why the OGC?

Establishing the OGC as a leader in the advancement of interoperable AR is important for three reasons: 
Few people currently working in AR have the knowledge (practical or theoretical) and skills they require to develop efficient and flexible solutions with 3D spatial data. OGC members who are world-renowned experts in 3D data acquisition, management and utilization can reduce the likelihood of there being delays in achieving interoperable AR systems by avoiding common misconceptions or relying on incorrect or out-of-date assumptions,
Many existing OGC standards can be the basis for scalable AR and/or be extended to meet the requirements of AR developers and users, where there are gaps in standards for interoperable AR, the OGC’s collaborative and consensus building approach to addressing those gaps will ensure that diverse stakeholders’ needs are heard and met.

Why now? 

Augmented Reality technology is far from mature and there are many challenges facing early adopters that have yet to be addressed. Lack of interoperability is one of the challenges. Standards are not the only approach to addressing interoperability, however, it is one for which the OGC members are well placed to advocate.


  • Augmented Reality is the non-immersive visualization of digital information in context with (mapped in) the user’s live experience of the physical world. The focus of these pages and the AR Summit is AR (not XR, MAR, VR or assisted reality).
  • AR Cloud is the use of artificial intelligence, 3D spatial mapping and edge computing technologies to provide value and lower the barriers to delivery of digital information for use in high quality (3D, registered in depth, interactive) Augmented Reality experiences.
  • Spatial Computing is the convergence many technologies that make it possible for users “see” and map the real world, understand it, and predict the next moves of objects within it, while doing the same for digital worlds that may or may not have ties to the real, physical world, all the while helping humans and/or machines navigate either.
