The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is a standards development organisation of more than 500 businesses, government agencies, research organizations, and universitiesworking towards making geospatial (location) infor mation and services FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Over recent years the OGC has moved to develop standards that enable Web APIs to handle location information in an effective way. The OGC API family of standards defines modular API building blocks that spatially enable Web APIs in a consistent way. What types of APIs publish location information? Any API that publishes data that includes one or more geospatial coordinates, postal addresses, place names or persons associated with a location. The new OGC APIs make use of the OpenAPI Specification (OAS) – a broadly adopted industry standard for describing modern APIs. The presentation will introduce the OGC API standards, describe some of the use cases they address and discuss the impact the standards are already having across industry. This impact includes, for example, endorsement of the OGC API – Features standard as a Good Practice by the European Union’s INSPIRE community and the standard’s approval by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 19168-1: 2020.
